Organ Scholarships at all Oxford Colleges are awarded subject to the candidate receiving an academic offer to study at the University; all offers are conditional, and require candidates to achieve specific A level results. Organ playing auditions and academic interviews take place in Oxford in September; Magdalen organ scholars are required to read for a degree in Music. Those elected to Organ Scholarships at Magdalen College are expected to commit fully to the Choir. Scholars enjoy a busy and varied schedule, and it is perfectly possible to balance academic and organ duties.

There is provision for two Organ Scholars at Magdalen College. Candidates are expected to have well developed skills in organ playing to at least ABRSM Grade 8, and usually ARCO. They assist the Informator Choristarum in all aspects pertaining to the training of the Choir. Organ tuition is provided by the College, and in addition to regular service playing and conducting, there are opportunities for continuo playing, concerts, tours, recordings and collaborations with professional instrumental ensembles. Organ Scholars are given accommodation with a piano, and have regular access to the new Chapel organ.

Organ scholars receive a number of benefits as part of their scholarship. Singing, organ and conducting lessons are provided and paid for by the College; pianos are provided in rooms; when attending College events such as reunion dinners and weekly formal hall, meals are provided free of charge.

The Informator is always pleased to meet with prospective candidates informally throughout the year.

To arrange a time to meet, please email choir@magd.ox.ac.uk.
